يتمحور هذا العمل حوال سؤال مهم: "هل من موقف مسيحي من العنف لإحقاق العدالة؟".
يناقش هذا الكتاب موضوعين: موضوع العدالة، وموضوع العنف، والارتباط بينهما، أما زمن تأليفه فهو في ثمانينيات القرن المنصرم وفيه محاولة للإجابة عمَا كان يشغل اهتمامات الشباب اللبناني وهواجسهم في الحرب الدائرة بين طرفين متصارعين يتخذون من النضال العنفي وسيلة لإحقاق العدالة. يقول كوستي بندلي: "إن السؤال طرح.. سنة 1981، ايَ في وقت كانت الحرب اللبنانية مستمرة فيه منذ ستة أعوام. ولا بد أن الشباب طارحي السؤال كانوا يلاحظون أن الفئات المسلحة المتصارعة آنذاك "على الساحة اللبنانية" كانت تقول كلها بالنضال المسلح طريقاً إلى الحقوق المشروعة التي تقتضيها العدالة..." وفي سعيه للإجابة عن هذه الأسئلة لم يقدم الكتاب "النضال اللا عنفي" على أنه الحل المطلق والوحيد لمشكلة العدالة في الأرض. إنما أراد التأكيد على القيمة النموذجية التي يمتلكها هذا النوع من النضال، الجديد نسبياً في تاريخ الإنسانية، والمساهمة في كشف طبيعته وأساليبه ومنجزاته. فهذا الكتاب يستلهم مؤلفه الإنجيل والإيمان المسيحي، من هنا أدرج في سلسلة "الانجيل على دروب العصر" ولكنه في نفس الوقت يخاطب كل من استقام قلبه وخلصت نيته، إلى أي معتقد أو مذهب انتمى بغية خلق رؤيا متجددة تبشر بستقبل أفضل لبلد دمَره العنف وأجهض فيه العدالة.
يتمفصل الكتاب في مقدمات عامة عن المنطلقٍ العام للسلوك المسيحي. وقسمين وفصول: القسم الأول جاء بعنوان: "النضال العنفي" لإحقاق العدالة. أما القسم الثاني فجاء بعنوان: "النضال اللاعنفي " لإحقاق العدالة. وأخيراً خلاصة بعنوان: نحو رؤية متوازنة لموضوع شائك.
