تتضاعف حيرة القارىء الذي لم يتعرف بعد على هوية (القنفذ) الذي يرومه إسلام أبو شكير. إذ أن الغموض في هذه البداية الروائية ما هو إلا إثارة وتحفيز لإضاءة سرد لغوي يحاول إخفاء شيء ما، فكلما كانت البداية وصفية، جاء غموضها يختزن دلالات كثيرة، والمفاجىء أن الشخصية التي تركها ملتبسة في بدء الرواية والتي تركها الكاتب تقدم نفسها وعائلتها هي شخصية رأس النظام في سورية وأفراد عائلته إذ تصور الرواية والتي وسمها أبو شكير بـ "سيرة حياة طويلة جداً" الإرهاصات الأولى لوفاة الإبن البكر للرئيس الأسبق في سورية ثم مرحلة الإعداد للخليفة المنتظر "عندما مات باسل اتضح (هكذا .. فجأة .. ودون سابق إنذار) ثمة خياراً آخر لم يكن أحد يراه، أو يكترث به، إنه أنا، الشخصية الإستثنائية في الزمن الصعب، القوة، والذكاء، والثقافة، والتواضع، والإنفتاح، والمستقبل، وهذا الهراء كله ...". تتوالى الأحداث في الرواية حتى وفاة الرئيس الأب وبدأ تسلم الإبن مقاليد السلطة "الآن توفي الوالد. وسأصبح رئيساً بعد شهر تقريباً، أتمنى أن يتيح لي المنصب الجديد العودة إلى بعض تلك العادات ..." وبغض النظر عن مرامي النص ومحتواه بدأ الكاتب أبو شكير يكتب في مناخ من الحرية تغدو معه الكتابة نوعاً من الفضح والتعرية والحفر تحت طبقات الممنوع التي تراكمت عبر السنين، وهو يفعل ذلك من خلال العزف على وتر العلاقة الملتبسة بين السلطة والمواطن، في عالم مرجعي يتكامل فيه القمع السياسي مع المحرم الإجتماعي (التابو) لكل مفاصل الحياة في سورية بكل ما فيها من توتر وخوف وصراع خفي ومعلن. إن الكتابة في هكذا حقل لا شك أنه نوعاً من الإقتحام، فهل أراد إسلام أبو شكير المواجهة؟...
