يضم هذا الكتاب مجموعة من عشر مواعظ، ألقاها القديس أغوسطينوس على أبناء أبرشيته بدافع من المحبة والغيرة الرسولية، شارحاً رسالة القديس يوحنا الأولى بمناسبة فصح سنة 415، إيماناً منه بأن الدعوة إلى الخير هي من صميم رسالته، كراع، وقف نفسه على خدمة ربه وقريبه، وبان التحذير من الإثم واجب من أقدس واجباته الراعوية.
وإنك لتعرف من خلال كل موعظة أن الست الأولى قد ألقيت على مدى ستة أيام متعاقبة من أسبوع الفصح. أما الأربع الأخرى فقد جاءت في مناسبات لاحقة من زمن الفصح وقد يكون ذلك في السبوت والأحاد التالية وفقاً للاحتفالات المرعية.
أما وقد عرفنا المكان والزمان اللذين قيلت فيهما هذه المواعظ فلا بد من أن نقول كلمة عن غاية يوحنا من هذه الرسالة: كان يهدف يوحنا إلى تثقيف المؤمنين وحثهم على إدراك السر الذي منه يعيشون: وهو أن الله نور ومحبة: فعلى كل من أراد أن يشترك بالنور أن يكف عن المعاصي ويحفظ الوصايا ويحتقر العالم ويقاوم الشيطان وأعوانه. واشتراكه بالمحبة يتسم بالصفات عينها.
ويتخذ القديس أغوسطينوس هاتين الفكرتين: الله ظهر نوراً والله ظهر محبة أساساً لمواعظه، فلا يكتفي بشرحهما بأسلوب تجريدي صرف بل يسعى إلى تطبيقهما على الواقع المسيحي، منطلقاً من التجسد ، سراً وواقعاً، إلى ما وصل إليه المسيحيون في ذاك العصر من حياة روحية قلقة ونفسية مضطربة، ناهيك عن الخلاف الذي أخذ يذر قرنه فيما بينهم بسبب الضلال الذي أدخلته إلى صفوفهم البدع المختلفة، التي عصفت بالكنيسة الإفريقية، فباعدت بين الأخ وأخيه وشتتت شمل العائلة الواحدة وعرضتها إلى التقاتل والتفكك الروحي والاجتماعي.
أجل، انطلاقاً من هذا الواقع المرير الذي عاشه، دعا أغوسطينوس مستمعيه، إلى اعتناق الحق وحده، والابتعاد عمن سماهم مسحاء كذبة لأنهم ليسوا منهم وإن عاشوا بينهم، وحثهم على التمرس بالمحبة تجاه الجميع لأن المحبة وحدها تضمن إعادة السلام إلى كنيسة المسيح وبخاصة حين يجمع المؤمن في حياته اليومية بين أصالة الإيمان الصافي ووداعة المحبة المجانية.
