تعد مدينة بغداد من أعظم مدن العالم في القرن الوسطى، فقد ضاهت القسطنطينية عاصمة البيزنطيين، ودمشق عاصمة الأمويين ولم تضاهها المدن الأخرى كقرطبة والقاهرة فهي بلد العلماء وعيش الأولياء، وليس بين المدن العربية والإسلامية مدينة حظيت بعناية الباحثين والعلماء والمؤرخين والجغرافيين كمدينة بغدادية. فقد عني العرب والمسلمون والأجانب من المستشرقين وغيرهم بوصف بغداد وتدوين أخبارها وأخبار رجالها والكتابة عنها في شتى الميادين.
وقد تصدى المرحوم "إبراهيم عبد الغني الدوربي البغدادي" لهذا الموضوع في كتابه (البغداديون أخبارهم ومجالسهم) فسجل أخبار أهل بغداد ومجالسهم منذ أواخر العهد العثماني بالعراق، ذاكراً في كتابه طبيعة كل مجلس والأشخاص الذين يحضرون هذه المجالس التي تحدث عنها البغدادي في كتابه فذكر على سبل المثال لا الحصر: مجلس الشيخ امجد الزهاوي، مجلس الشيخ عاصم الكيلاني، مجلس الشيخ نجم الدين "الواعظ مجلس عبد القادر الخطيب الأعظمي، مجلس الشيخ عبد الله الشيخلي، مجلس الشيخ كمال الدين الطائي...الخ.
