مجالس الأدب في بغداد كانت عامرة في ذلك الزمن عرف فيه المجد طريقه إلى بغداد. حيث كان يلتئم شمل الظرفاء والأدباء. ولم تكن الأحاديث في هذه المجالس تقتصر على مطارحة الشعر ومناقشة أمور الأدب والدين واللغة بل كانت تتعدى ذلك إلى تناول مختلف المستجدات وقضايا الساعة التي لها علاقة بحياة الناس ومعيشتهم. كما تتناول تلك الأحاديث صفات العرب وسجاياهم وتقاليدهم وعاداتهم وأخبارهم.
والكاتب بحكم كونه حفيد الشاعر العراقي الكبير ملا عبود الكرخي فقد أتيحت له فرصة الإطلاع على الكثير مما كان يجري في هذه المجالس فجاء كتابه ناطقاً بما حفلت به تلك المجالس من أحاديث وفوائد جمة، والكتاب في جزأين جاء الجزء الأول بمثابة متحف ضم صوراً نادرة لأعلام الشعر والأدب والصحافة والفن كالرصافي والرهاوي والكرخي وغيرهم كما عرف بجده الكرخي وآل الكرخي. وقد جاء الجزء الثاني ليضم مجموعة من المناظرات والطرائف والوقائع.
