قصد الفارابي من هذا الكتاب إحصاء العلوم المشهورة علماً علماً، والتعريف بمجمل ما يشتمل عليه كل واحد منها، وأجزاء كل ما له منها أجزاء، ومجمل ما في كل واحد من أجزاء، وليحيط بكافة العلوم قسم الفارابي كتابه إلى خمسة فصول، تحدث في أولها عن علم الكلام وأجزائه، وفي الثاني تناول علم المنطق وأجزائه، أما الثالث فخصصه لعلوم التعاليم، والتي هي العدد والهندسة وعلم المناظر وعلم النجوم التعليمي وعلم الموسيقى وعلم الأثقال وعلم الحيل، أما الرابع فضمنه مبادئ العلم الطبيعي وأجزائه، ومبادئ العلم الإلهي وأجزائه، هذا وجمع في الفصل الخامس والأخير بحثاً في العلم المدني وأجزائه وآخر في علم الفقه، وعلم الكلام.
