يُعاني الإحصاء من سوء فهم جوهري مؤسف يُضلل الناس عن طبيعته الأساسية. وهذا الاعتقاد الخاطئ هو أنه يتطلب مهارة حسابية كبيرة مُملة، وأنه نتيحة لذلك مجال جاف وممل يخلو من الخيال أو الإبداع أو الإثارة. بيد أن هذه صورة خاطئة تماماً لمجال علم الإحصاء الحديث، إذ إنها مبنية على تصور يرجع تاريخه إلى أكثر من نصف قرن . تحديداً، تتجاهل هذه الصورة تماماً حقيقة أن أجهزة الكومبيوتر قد غيرت وجه المجال تماماً ، إذ حولته من مجال معتمد على الحساب إلى نظام قائم على استخدام أدوات برمجية متطورة لسبر البيانات بحثاً عن الفهم والتنوير. وهذا مايتمحور حوله مجال علم الإحصاء الحديث : استخدام الأدوات لمساعدة الإداراك وتوفير كل من وسائل تسليط الضوء وسبل الفهم، وأدوات الرصد والتوجه، ونُظُم المساعدة في عملية صنع القرار. كل هذا وأكثر يمثل جوانب مجال علم الإحصاء الحديث .
