إن كبار الكتّاب تطوف بخواطرهم نوادر الأفكار، وتلوذ بقلوبهم شوارد العواطف، حتى إذا صحت عزيمتهم على جمع شتيت فكرهم، ولم ما تفرق من عواطفهم، نزلت بصدورهم ضيقة لإرتيابهم في قيمة ما يخرجون، فإما أن يكون ما يقدمه الكاتب ظاهراً في زي المتداول المألوف، فيعزّ عليه ألا يكون ما تنتجه قريحته أجل وأسمى مما تنتجه سائر القرائح، وإما أن تتزيا له بنات فكرة في زي طريق، فيخشى أن تقع في النفوس موقع ما لم تألفه النفوس، ويترجح عنده أن الناس أدنى إلى أن تميل عن الجديد، لا أن تميل إليه وقد ينبغي له أن يخشى ذلك إذا هو قدّم للجمهور رقصة طريفة، والطريف لا يلقى من الناس كرامة، ولا يجد من الدهر معيناً، فإن بني على أساس متين فإن الناس تتعشقه، بعد أن تضطهده وتطارده.
ولقد جاءنا الرسل بشرائع جديدة، رغب الناس عن تلك الشرائع وما لبثوا أن رغبوا فيها، لأنها جاءت بخير وإصلاح؛ ولقد جاء "دوماس" بقصة تبعث تلاوتها في النفس رحمة بالبغيّ، ولم تكن الناس تنظر للبغايا إلا بعين المقت والغضب، فجببهم برأي لم يخفضوا له جناحاً، ولكن خلدت تلك القصة وأقبل الناس عليها لإعتمادها على رأي حق، وهو جوب أن تسمع أقوال تلك الضحايا قبل أن يقضى عليها.
عزّز الكتاب قصته بقضية عادلة، وأمدّ الله قلمه بسرٍّ من الأسرار التي تصل إلى النفوس من وراء تعابير من السحر، وألفاظ من البلور، لا تحجب العواطف، فتصل إنفعالات الكاتب إلى فؤاد القارئ، فيعيش في جو من الشعر، وعالم من النور.
تجددت أساليب الكتابة، وتعددت سبل البحث فيق المظاهر العمرانية، وتدُووِلت في الأجيال من بعد الأسكندر "دوماس" قصص وروايات، ولكن قصة "غادة الكاميليا" تخلد كما تخلد نفائس الكتب، ذلك لأنها حسرات مخلص يتحرق فؤاده عطفاً وأسفاً على خطيئة البغاء.
