ولدت مارغريت ميتشل في مدينة أتلانتا، وهي إحدى مدنه ولاية جورجيا الجنوبية. كان والدها محامياً ورئيساً لجمعية أتلانتا التاريخية. وكان جميع أفراد الأسرة، مهتمين بالتاريخ الأمريكي. نشأت مارغريت في جو تملؤه الحكايات والقصص عن الحرب الأصلية الأمريكية. عملت مارغريت فترة من الزمن في صحيفة "أتلانتيك جورنال" وفي العام 1925 تزوجت جون مارش ثم شرعت في الكتابة. وقد قامت خلال العشر سنوات التي تلت زواجها بكتابة كل القصص التي سمعتها عن الحرب الأهلية فكانت النتيجية مولد رواية "ذهب مع الريح" التي نشرت للمرة الأولى عام 1936 وفازت بجائزة بوليترز الأدبية.
تعتبر رواية سكارليت تكملة لرواية "ذهب مع الريح" إذ تدور أحداث هذه الرواية حول شخصية "سكارليت أوهارا" بطلة رواية ذهب مع الريح. وهي امرأة أمريكية إيرلندية الأصل، عاصرت الحرب الأهلية الأمريكية وشهدت جزءاً من الصراع البريطاني-الإيرلنيد. كل هذا بالإضافة إلى حياة عاطفية مليئة بالتقلبات والمشاكل. وبالعودة إلى ما يميز هذه الترجمة من الرواية نجد أنها جاءت محمّلة بترجمة للنص الإنجليزي بالإضافة إلى النص الإنجليزي الأصلي أما خاتمتها فألحقت بتوليفة من الأسئلة التطبيقية التي تدور حول فهم النص.
