آمن الكثير من المسلمين على إختلاف مذاهبهم بظهور المهدي من ولد فاطمة عليها السلام في آخر الزمان، ليملأ الأرض قسطاً وعدلاً بعدما ملئت ظلماً وجوراً، ولم يختلف من آمنوا به، إلا في ولادته في القرن الثالث الهجري، فالإمامية آمنت بوجوده إبتداءً من ذلك القرن، وأنَّه غاب الغيبة الصغرى ثم غاب الغيبة الكبرى، وكان له سفراء خلال الغيبة الصغرى، ثم انقطعت السفارة في غيبة كبرى لا يعرف إلا الله متى ينتهي أمدها، وآخرون يرون أنَّه يولد في آخر الزمان، ثم بعد ذلك اتفقوا على كثير من المهام، كما اتفقوا على كثير من العلامات، كما اتفقوا على ما يؤمل منه والنتائج التي سيحققها من قضاءٍ على الظلم.
وسيتضمن البحث الفصول التالية: الفصل الأول: وجود الإمام عليه السلام وولادته، مع التنبيه على أنَّ هذا الخلاف لم يعد مهماً في العصر الحاضر، الفصل الثاني: أسباب غيبة الإمام عليه السلام، وإنتفاع الناس بغيبته، وكيف يتلاءم ذلك مع نظرية الإمامية في ضرورة وجود معصوم، الفصل الثالث: عقيدتنا في رؤية الإمام عليه السلام في اليقظة، والسفارة في الغيبة الكبرى، أي تكليف شخص ما أدعى رؤية الإمام عليه السلام بإيصال رسالة إلى غيره، الفصل الرابع: عقيدتنا في رؤيا الإمام عليه السلام في المنام، وما هي القيمة الدينية لهذه الرؤيا، مع إضاءة إجمالية على حديث من رآنا فقد رآنا، الفصل الخامس: نظرة إجمالية إلى العلامات، وعقيدتنا بالنسبة إليها، الفصل السادس: عقيدتنا في توقيت الظهور.
