تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى تفسير استقرار الأردن السياسي في مواجهة الآثار الحافلة بالعقبات في الوضع السياسي الداخلي والمعيقات أمام التحديث. وكان الأخير منها يدعم الأول في نواح عديدة. كما تدرس "فرضية الثغرة" لصموئيل هنتنجتن وتطبيقها على الحالة الأردنية. ويتناول الفصل الأول نظريات التحديث كما يحاول تبيان محدداتها والفروق بينها وإلقاء بعض الضوء على العلاقة بين التحديث والاستقرار السياسي.
أما الفصل الثاني فيتناول الخلفية التاريخية للأردن وتأسيس الدولة وتطورها السياسي في أيامها الأولى ويعرض للبنية الاجتماعية كما يتطرق هذا الفصل بصورة رئيسية للجذور السياسية في الأردن الحديث.
وأما الفصل الثالث فدراسة لحدثين بارزين في انعدام الاستقرار السياسي وهما الحركة الوطنية بين سنة 1955ىوسنة 1957 والصراع الداخلي سنة 1970، وكذلك يستعرض استمرار القضية الفلسطينية كأحذ عوامل عدم الاستقرار في السياسة الأردنية.
ويوضح الفصل الرابع عملية التحديث في الأردن مع تطوره ونموه الاقتصادي وما أصابه من تطور في ميادين الاجتماع والتربية والتعليم والتحضير والمواصلات، مبيناً دور الحكومة في عملية التطور.
ويبين الفصل الخامس عوامل الاستقرار السياسي في الأردن وهي الملك. والجيش والقبائل مع دور كل منها في السياسة الأردنية بينما يأتي القسم الثاني من هذا الفصل خاتمة للدراسة وشاملاً لما توصلت إليه هذه الدراسة من استنتاجات ونتائج نظرية.
