عالجت هذه الرواية الهجرة من أرياف جنوب وجنوب شرقي العراق إلى بغداد، وتجري أحداثها في دمشق، وبيروت، وعدن ولندن، لكنها كثيراً ما تعود إلى الحياة داخل العراق، إلى المكان الأول الذي يشغل مساحة واسعة من مجريات السرد، حيث الحب والأحلام والكفاح اليومي العنيد في مواجهة قسوة الواقع ومرارته.
في لحظة السكون الغامر تلك تذكر ما كانت تقوله أمه مكية الحسن للنساء اللائي يجلبن لها أطفالهن المرضى لمعالجتهم بالأعشاب ويسألنها عن علامة الشفاء. روت لهن قائلة إن علي عندما كان صغيرا مرض ذات مرة. ارتفعت درجة حرارته فأخذتْ تغذيه بشراب أعدته من أعشاب هندية، وتبرِّد جبينه بكمادات مبللة، وتضعه في المهد عاريا. في اليوم الثالث أضناها الخوف لأن الطفل لم يُظهِر أي تحسن وقررت أن تأخذه إلى الطبيب في الغد، وطلبت من سلمان اليونس أن يستعد لمرافقتها.
من أجواء الرواية نقرأ: "أمضت النهار كله جالسة قرب المهد. وعند الغروب قفزت من الفرح وصاحت على زوجها أن يسرع ويرى بنفسه. هرع نحوها. وقبل أن يصلها هتفت: «علي سيشفى». سألها عما يجعلها تعتقد بذلك فأشارت إلى عضو الطفل. كان منتصبا. قالت إن هذه علامة على شفاء قريب. وبالفعل مع شروق شمس اليوم التالي استيقظ الطفل سليماً معافى."
