يشكّل هذا الكتاب مجموع الأعمال الشعرية الكاملة للأديب والشاعر جميل قاسم، وقد اختار له عنوان (كتاب الشعر) ليضم بين دفتيه عالمه الشعري، الذي يتجاوز ما هو فردي خاص في حياة الشاعر إلى ما هو عام في حياة الناس.
فماذا يقول لنا صاحب كتاب الشعر (من الشعر):
"الشعر جملة مجنحة،/ كونٌ من عدم الأشياء،/ قيامةُ الكلمات في حروف الألفباء/ نبوءةٌ وفكرةٌ، ووحيٌ،/ وما السماء إلا السماء/ دهشة الصبح والشفق،/ براءةُ الأشياء الأولى/ وردةٌ تفوحُ سراً/ وخطراتُ حبق،/ جذوةٌ متقدة نوراً وناراً،/ طيرٌ يحلقُ دوماً،/ أضطرمُ فكرةٍ/ حدوُ أجراس بعيدة/ وحبل من مسدْ ...".
"جميل قاسم" شاعرٌ واع لدلالات النص المتنوع المستويات والمناخات والدلالات، فحبه الخارق للشعر وفنونه، واهتمامه بمكنونات اللغة، وطبيعتها المزخرفة، حاك لشعره قصائدٌ رائدة تغوص في حب الوطن والأهل والرفاق، وقد تمظهرت في كتاب الشعر في بُنىً جمالية هي مزيج من إيقاع اللغة وطرب العاطفة؛ فكان بشعره أبو حيان التوحيدي عندما قال "أحسن الكلام ما قامت صورته، بين نظمٍ كأنه نثر، ونثرٍ كأنه شعر".
يضم الكتاب قصائد في الشعر العربي الحديث جاءت تحت العناوين الرئيسية الآتية: 1- "أطوار"، 2- "أشعار"، 3- "حوار" ، 4-"تقاسيم أخيرة".
