يعد كتاب الشعر لابن شمس الخلافة من الكتب تالكبيرة الثرية بمادتها وكثرة شعرائها، وجودة الشعر الذي حواه، حيث تناول الكتاب موضوعات كثيرة من شعر الشعراء السابقين الذين وصل بعض شعرهم وخفي بعضه الاخر ففيه الغزل الرقيق بأنواعه وفيه صفات الجمال في الشعر والعذار والثغر والريق والنكهة ووصف الخال والشعر والمشي وآلات المتجملين ووصف المتجملين وآلات الجمال. ولا ينسى الشوق إلى الأوطان وذكر الأحباب وما يؤثره نوح الحمام في المحبين والمغتربين، وسهر المحبين وطول لياليهم وشوقهم إلى الأوطان ومن فيها ممن يحبون.
