يعالج هذا الكتاب جميع مسائل ما وراء الطبيعة معالجة فلسفية مستندة إلى القواعد الإسلامية ولا تشذ عنها ويثبت حقائقها إثباتاً عقلياً. ويمثل هذا الكتاب عمل الغزالي البنائي في حقل ما وراء الطبيعة ويعتبر أوسع مؤلف له من حيث موضوعه. وقد خصص الغزالي هذا الكتاب للبحث العقلي عن قواعد العقائد وإجلاء للحقيقة وإيضاحاً للعقيدة الصحيحة مع بيان العلاقة بين أحكام الشرع المنقول والحق المقول فالعقل مع الشرع نور على نور فلا إفراط ولا تفريط بل الواجب المحتوم في الاعتقاد ملازمة الاقتصاد والاعتماد على الصراط المستقيم. وأهم موضوعات الكتاب: الأدلة العقلية على وجود الله وصفاته, صفات المعاني ومتعلقاتها, أحكام صفات الله تعالى, أفعال الله تعالى وما يجوز في أفعاله تعالى, النبوة ودلائل نبوة محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم, وجوب التصديق بأمور ورد بها الشرع وقضى بجوازها العقل, الإمامة وشروطها, بيان من يجب تكفيره من الفرق المبتدعة.
