يقفو خطوات شقيقه "الرثاء في العصر الجاهلي"، ويستكمل مسيرته: فيرصد ما طرأ على هذا الغرض من تطور في عصر صدر الإسلام، في ظل العوامل المتغيرة، ودور الحروب والغزوات في نموه وكثرته، وأثر الإسلام في شعرائه.
كما يرصد دور المرأة فيه، والتغيّر الذي اعتراه من حيث القلة والكثرة، ومن حيث الجودة والرداءة؛ ويكشف عن الحرب الأدبية أو النقائض التي كان مدارها هذا الغرض بين الشعراء المسلمين وغيرهم.
ويعلل لما أصاب هذا الشعر من رقة ولين، وما غلب عليه في بعض فتراته من روح الجدل والخطابة.
