هذا الكتاب هو دراسة لأدب صفوة من رجال انمازوا في قبيلتهم وأمتهم، فجعلوا من الكلمة المعبّرة، والقول الصادق، سبيلًا لتوجيه الأبناء، وتخليد الآباء، ونشر الفضيلة، ومنع الظلم، ومعاقبة الظالم، وكان لكبر سنّهم ومكانتهم الرفيعة، ورياستهم للقبيلة، أثر لنجاحهم في ذلك، فكبر السن يعني امتلاك التجربة، واختبار الحياة خيرها وشرها، فتأتي كلماتهم صادقة، لأنها جاءت بعد تجربة عاشوها وشهدوا أحداثها، أما رياستهم للقبيلة، فتعني نفاذ كلمتهم، والتزام وصيتهم، وتطبيقها من بعدهم.
ثم أردفت هذه الدراسة بمستدرك وملحق:
أما المستدرك: فكان لما استدرك من أشعار حكماء تميم مما لم يرد فيما جمعه الدارسون ونشروه.
وأما الملحق فكان للنصوص النثرية لحكماء تميم، فقد حاول المؤلف جمعها وتوثيقها توثيقًا علميًّا من خلال المصادر التي اعتمدها في تثبيتها، فهي لم تجمع من قبل.
