لم يكن إختياري لكتابي شعر آمال الزهاوي مجرد مصادفة نشأت في لحظة دراسة عن موضوع يصلح أن يكون إختياراً لدراسة فنية لشاعرٍ حديث، بل كان وليد رغبة نّمت حين قرأت بعض دواوين شعرها ولكنني لم أحظَ بدراسات نقدية تضيء جوانب تجربتها الشعرية التي ما انكفت تِهّب جذوة شبابها وعصارة روحها لمصباح الشعر الذي لا ينطفئ، وقد شعرت أن هناك حاجة ماسّة لدراسة شعر أمال الزهاوي التي نأت عنها الكتابات النقدية الجادة فظلت دواوينها الشعرية مركونة فوق رفوف المكتبات دون دراسة جادة وعميقة تضيء جوانباً مشرقة من تجربة الشاعرة آمال الزهاوي وتحاول أنصافها لكي يأخذ شعرها موقعه الحقيقي في مشهد الشعر العراقي النسوي الذي لمعت فيه نجوم زاهرة أضاءت ساحة العراق التي أنجبت كثيراً من الشعراء والشواعر، اللواتي كان لهن شرف الريادة في حركة الشعر العربي الحديث ومنهن نازك الملائكة التي عُدت من رواد الشعر الحرّ في العراق.
إنَّ مصادر كتابي عن آمال الزهاوي اعتمد على دواوينها التي أصدرتها تباعاً بدءاً من ديوانها البكر (الفدائي والوحش) سنة 1969م حتى صدور آخر ديوان شعري لها وهو (الشّتات) في بيروت سنة 2000م إذا لم تنقطع عن رفد الحركة الشعرية بعطاءٍ شعريّ متميز، إذ لم يصبها النضوب بل كانت حياتها الشعرية عطاء.
من قصائد ورؤى شعرية ظلت تواكب بها حركة العصر الحديث بما حفل به من أحداث وفواجع وأحلام ضائعة وذكريات هاربةً من أسار قيود كثيرة كانت تقف عائقاً في طريق الإبداع والإلهام الشعريين تجاوزتهما الشاعرة بصبرٍ ودأب.
