يهدف السيد رضى الدين علي بن الطاووس الحلّي (589-664)ه في تأليفه هذين الكتابين الممثّلين أمام القارىء إلى الرد عما قرع سمعه من شبهة واحدة ألقاها بعض الناس، أنكرت تسمية رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم للإمام علي رضي الله عنه بـ "أمير المؤمنين" في حياته.
ولما سمع ما ادّعاه الرجل أحس بالتكليف الواجب ورآه في أهم وظائفه التي كانت تحيط به، وهو المرجع الكبير للشيعة والزعيم لعلمائها في زمانه، فقدمه على ساير ما يهم عند غيره واشتغل بتأليف هذه الكتب الثلاثة للرد على الرجل على أمر ربما لا يدرك أهميته كثير ممن لا يعرف أسس الدين وأصول الإسلام.
وعليه، فقد أورد المصنّف كل حديث فيه دلالة أو غشارة إلى موضوع البحث، بالإضافة إلى ذلك. فقد ضم الكتاب مجموعة من المعجزات والإخبارات عن أحوال القيامة وشيء من تاريخ النبي الأعظم (صلى الله عليه وسلم). ولأهمية هذا الكتاب اعتنى بتحقيقه المحققان محمد باقر الأنصاري ومحمد صادق الأنصاري، معتمدين على أربعة نسخ حيث عملا على مقابلة النسخ ومراجعتها وتخريج الأحاديث إتماماً للفائدة.
