لما كان (علم الرجال) أحد العلوم الإسلامية المهمة التي يتوقف عليها الاجتهاد، واستنباط الأحكام الشرعية، فقد اهتم بشأنه الكثير من العلماء. وألفوا فيه الموسوعات الرجالية والكتب الخاصة التي تتناوله كعلم يتمتع بأهمية متميزة في حقل الدراسات الإسلامية، وما كتاب (معجم رجال الحديث) إلا خطوة متقدمة على هذا الطريق، ويعد الأبرز في مجال الكتب الرجالية. وقد التزم الإمام الخوئي بالمنهج العلمي في دراسته القيمة وتحليلاته لسير الأعلام الذين ترجم لهم، وكان من صلب موضوعه الرجوع-عند الترجمة-إلى أصول المصادر وفي مقدمتها كتب الطوسي والكشي والنجاشي، أما رجال الفضائري، فنتيجة للشك الحاصل في نسبة رجاله المتداول اليوم إليه، فقد اعتمد الإمام الخوئي على ما نقله العلامة الحلي في الخلاصة عن ابن الفضائري، وكذلك ما نقل عنه في رجال ابن داوود ومجمع الرجال للقهباني.
