لمع اسم ابن عطاء الله عالماً من أجلّ علماء الشريعة، مصطبغاً بحقائقها ولبابها التي تحرر الإنسان من حظوظ النفس والهوى، وترقى به إلى سدة الصدق مع الله، وتمام الرضا عنه، وكمال الثقة به، والتوكل عليه، وكان إذا جلس للنصح والوعظ والتوجيه، أخذ حديثه بمجامع القلوب، وسرى من كلامه تأثير شديد إلى النفوس، أما كتابه (الحكم) فليس هناك كتيّباً صغيراً في حجمه انتشر في الأوساط المختلفة كانتشاره، وتقبلته العقول والنفوس كتقبلها له، وهو مجموعة مقاطع من الكلام البليغ الجامع لأوسع المعاني بأقل العبارات... كلها مستخلص من كتاب الله أو من سنة رسول الله صلى عليه وسلم، وهي تنقسم إلى ثلاثة أقسام: أما القسم الأول منها فيدور على محور التوحيد وحماية المسلم من أن يتسرب إليه شيء من المعاني الخفية الكثيرة للشرك، وأما القسم الثاني فيدور على محور الأخلاق والى تزكية النفس، وأما القسم الثالث فيدور على محور السلوك وأحكامه المختلفة، "والشيخ أبي العباس أحمد بن محمد الشهيد برزوق" هو واحد ممن عشق هذه الحكم، وواحد ممن أدلى بدلوه في شرحها في هذا الكتاب أملاً في بلوغ المعاني السامية والأسرار القدسية الكامنة في تضاعيفها. ولأهمية هذا الكتاب اعتنى بتحقيقه الأستاذ مصطفى المرزوقي معتمداً على مخطوطتين، وعمل على تخريج الأحاديث والآيات القرآنية، وأجرى تنظيماً جديداً لفقرات النص بناءً على معانيها.
