موضوع هذا الكتاب هو الحِكَم، والحكمة هي الخير الكثير كما قال الله تعالى: (يُؤْتِي الْحِكْمَةَ مَن يَشَآءُ وَمَن يُؤْتَ الْحِكْمَةَ فَقَدْ أُوتِيَ خَيْراً كَثِيراً)، وهي ضالَّة المؤمن كما قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: "الكلمة الحكمة ضالة المؤمن، حيث وجدها فهو أحق بها".
وقد صدرت هذه "الحكم" من قلب العارف بالله ابن عطاء الله السكندري قبل أن يتفوَّه بها لسانه، لذا كتب الله تعالى لها القبول والذيوع، فكثُر شُرَّاحُها والمنتفعون بها في جميع أقطار المسلمين، وكان منهم العلامة الشرقاوي شيخ شيوخ الأزهر في عصره، الذي جاء شرحه منسجماً مع "الحِكم" في كونه معبراً عن تجربة شخصية صادقة، إضافة إلى ما تميز به الشيخ الشرقاوي من تمكن علمي وأستاذية في العرض.
