إن من أعظم ما صنف في علم التصوف السّني هو كتاب "الحكم العطائية" في الآداب والحقائق التصوفية للشيخ الإمام "تاج الدين أحمد بن عطاء السكندري رضي الله عنه، فهو كتاب رائق العبارات، فائق الإشارات، موافق للعقائد السنية، جار على نهج الكتاب والسنة النبوية، قد احتوى من الآداب على لبابهما، ومن المعاملات القلبية على مقاصدهما، فجاء كتابا توقى به أنوار الإيمان واليقين، وتعرف به آداب العبودية اللائقة بين يدي رب العالمين.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب توالت عليه الشروح والإيضاحات، فكتب أئمة أهل السنة والجماعة في استخراج درره المطولات والمختصرات، ومن هذه الشروح، شرح الشيخ المحدث "محمد حياة السندي المدني" الذي يختص به – هذا الكتاب – والذي اعتمد فيه محققه "نوار حمادي" على مخطوط دار الكتاب الوطنية في تونس وهو عبارة عن مجموع يحتوي على الشرح المسمى "الحكم العطائية" ويليه "شرح الحكم الحدادية" للشيخ محمد حياة السندي أيضا.
ومن وصايا الحكم العطائية موعظة نافعة يقول فيها"السندي": ينبغي للإنسان أن يتعلم أولا ما يصحح به اعتقاده، ثم يتعلم ما يقدر به على تحصيل ما يحبه الله تعالى من الأعمال والأحوال، واجتناب ما يكرهه من الأفعال، ثم يجتهد في إتيان المأمورات وترك المنهيات خالصا لوجه رب المخلوقات (...) ويذكر الموت وما يلاقي عنده من السكرات، والقبر وما فيه من الصعوبات وليتزود له أحسن الحسنات ..."
