كتب الميجر جنرال د.ك. باليت هذا الكتاب بعد أن زار الجبهات العربية على أثر حرب 1973. والجنرال باليت من الوجوه التي تعرفها الأوساط العسكرية العربية في كل من مصر وسوريا والعراق والأردن ولبنان، منذ أن عمل ملحقاً عسكرياً لسفارة الهند في القاهرة في العام 1949، ومفوضاً لسفارات الهند في العديد من الدول العربية. وقد وصل اتصالاته هذه حتى بعد أن انتهت مهماته الرسمية. واستفاد من هذه الاتصالات في جمع المعلومات والمعطيات التي ساعدته على وضع كتابه هذا، والذي يعتبر من أفضل وادق ما كتب عن حرب 1973. ولقد تميز كتاب "الحر بالعربية الإسرائيلية الرابعة" بالموضوعية والحياد، رغم رفض المراجع الإسرائيلية التعاون مع الكاتب، أو السماح له بزيارة إسرائيل لمقابلة المسؤولين وجمع المعلومات من مصادرها الأصلية، على أساس أنه من المناصرين للعرب. إلا أن ذلك لم يؤثر على موقفه الحيادي الباحث عن الحقيقة المجردة.
