حرص المؤلف في هذه الدراسة المقتضبة أن يغطي أبرز الجوانب من حياة أبي العتاهية وشعره، أما حياته فتناول فيها: اسمه ولقبه، وأصله وأوصافه، وضعته، وبداية حياته، واتصاله بالخلفاء، واتهامه بـ"الزندقة، والبخل. وأخيراً احتضاره ووفاته، وأما شعره فقد عرض لموضوعين هامين هما: الشيب، والغزل، ثم أتبعهما بأهم آراء النقاد في شعر أبي العتاهية، ورأى الشاعر نفسه في شعره، وعكف على دراسة نموذجية من شعره، دراسة تحليلية، وأثبت قصيدة له في الشكوى، ثم أردف ذلك كله بالخصائص الفنية لشعره.
