يدل شعر أبي العتاهية على ثقافة جامعة لصنوف الحكم وضروب الآداب، فهو كثير الإقتباس من القرآن الكريم والحديث النبوي الشريف، وهو كثير الأخذ من الآثار والأخبار لا يقتصر على نوع منها بل يعم كل ما يصلح للأخذ من المواعظ الدينية، إسلامية أو غير إسلامية، وما يصلح لذلك من الحكمة العربية والأعجمية، فارسية أو هندية، أو يونانية ... وكان الزهد والحكمة وهو أخص الشعراء بهما وهما أخص أنواع الشعر به.
يسلط هذا الكتاب الضوء على عصر أبي العتاهية ودواعي شعره وأغراضه ويصف زهده وما ذكره القدماء من سببه وبدئه، ويبحث في أسباب زهده الدينية والعقلية وشواهدها من شعره، بالإضافة إلى زهدياته الإجتماعية والسياسية وحكمته ومذاهبه في شعره، وفي آرائه الكلامية والفلسفية، ورأيه هو "أبي العتاهية" في نفسه، مروراً بمعاني شعره وأخيلته، وفي مظاهر الصنعة في عبارته، ورواة شعره وأخباره ومصادرهما، ومنزلته الشعرية لدى حكام عصره، المهدي والهادي والرشيد والمأمون ثم آراء شعراء عصره في زهده، وفي شعر الزهد: في العصر الجاهلي وعصر صدر الإسلام والعصر الأموي، وإذا كان لنا أن نقرأ شيئاً من شعره في قوله:
"نظرت إلى الدنيا بعين عريضة / وفكرة مغرور وتدبير جاهل ، فقلت هو الدار التي ليس غيرها / ونافست منها في غرور وباطل ، وضيعت أهوالاً أمامي طويلة / بلدة ايام قصار قلائل ".
وإن دل هذا الكلام على شيء فإنما يدل على حقيقة هذا الشاعر وصراحته ونقاء صحيفته وأنه ليس من أهل الدنيا والرياء والنفاق كما ظن كثير من القدماء والمعاصرين.
