إن النقاش المتعدد الوجوه (القانوني، السياسي، الإجتماعي، الديني ... الخ) الذي أثاره ويثيره طرح موضوع الزواج المدني في لبنان، واتساع دائرة هذا النقاش ليشمل مختلف شرائح الشعب اللبناني، وبالنظر إلى أهمية هذا الموضوع لجهة ملامسته أهم أوجه الحياة، وبالرغم من أنه قد طُرح سابقاً من خلال عدة محاولات قام بها البعض، إلا أن هذه المحاولات بقيت بعيدة عن معرفة اللبنانيين، بسبب الحروب التي صرفت أنظار الرأي العام اللبناني عن هذا الموضوع، ومع فترات الهدوء النسبي التي يشهدها الوطن، يعود النقاش ليتجدد متخذاً صوراً مختلفة، من شطب للقيد الطائفي من قيود سجلات النفوس، إلى محاولة إجراء زواج مدني في لبنان اختيارياً على العاقدين نضال درويش وخلود سكرية، إلى تخصيص مواقع على الأنترنت يتم فيها تداول صور المتزوجين مدنياً في الخارج ... والبقية تأتي ... كان لهذا الموضوع الحيّز الكبير الذي شغل الرأي العام اللبناني على مدى أشهر عدة، ومع خمود جذوته على الصعيد الرسمي والشعبي إلا أنه لم ينتهِ، لأن الجهات التي أطلقته تنتظر الفرصة المناسبة لها لتعيد طرحه مرة أخرى، فما هو هذا الموضوع؟ ومن أين استوردته الجهات الداعية له؟ هل هو مطلب ملحّ لجميع اللبنانيين، أم هو حلم تسعى لتحقيقه مجموعة من اللبنانيين؟ إضافة إلى كثير من الإشكاليات والتساؤلات التي تثار حوله؟
وللإجابة على هذه التساؤلات ولشرح الإشكاليات التي تحيط بهذا الموضوع، عمد المؤلف إلى دراسته من خلال تقسيمه إلى بابين، وذلك على النحو التالي:
