"طغاة يتناسلون مثل الفطر. في أبراجهم غامضون. أيديهم ملوثة بالدم. ضحايا يتناسلون أباً عن جد. يسيرون الى قمة البرج راسفين بالأغلال والسلاسل. عليهم شرطة شداد غلاظ، يمسكون سياطهم بلذة، لذة السلطة والرهبة والتفرد. كانوا يشكلون حولهم سداً، لا يحبذون يميناً ولا شمالاً. الى اليمين هاوية فاغرة وإلى الشمال سياط جائعة. وعيناي لا تفارقان المعارج وطاقاتها وأعمدتها. تترصدان الأبواب التي يتسلل منها رهبان وشامانيون ومتنبئون ومنجمون، يرصدون من ذلك العلو الشاهق أحوال النجوم وحركة الأبراج ودلالات الفلك وحركات المجرات وتساقط الشهب. لا ينامون، يتقرون المصائر فيما حولهم من أمصار: أفق سومر وبابل وآشور والأنبار وشهريان والاسكندرية وقلعة كركوك ومفازات جلولاء وتلال حمرين. خاصة لاهية وحشد يغذ الخطى نحو المذبح وبلطة تجز الأعناق."
في روايته " ألواح" يصوّر الروائي العراقي شاكر الأنباري واقع الجندي العراقي وهمومه أبان الحرب العراقية الإيرانية من زاوية تختلف تماما عن زاوية الكتاب ممن طبل لثقافة القتل وزكى تلك الحرب التي كانت بادئة الخراب العراقي المعاصر.
يعد الروائي شاكر الأنباري من الروائيين العراقيين المشغولين في كتابة نصوص تتناول التاريخ العراقي المعاصر في الخمسين سنة المنصرمة من عمر الدولة العراقية الحديثة 1921.
