تطورت وظيفة اللّغة مع ظهور التداوليّة، ولم تعد وظيفتها مقتصرة على التوصيف، والتبليغ؛ بل أصبح ينظر إلى اللّغة بوصفها أداة للتأثير في العالم، فقد ركّز أوستن على الصفة الإنجازية في اللّغة، حينما أطلق نظريته الشهيرة بأفعال الكلام، الّتي مؤداها: إننا حين نتكلم ننجز العديد من الأفعال المختلفة...
وقد لاقت هذه النظرية رواجاً كبيراً في الدراسات الغربية في سبعينيات القرن الماضي، ولا زالت في تنام مستمر، وسرعان ما أدرك الباحثون العرب أن هذه الأفكار ليست إكتشافاً جديداً بالنسبة إلى التراث العربي والإسلامي؛ بقدر ما هي تركيز على بعض الأفكار المبثوثة فيه في نطاق واسع في كتب اللّغة: لا سيّما البلاغية منها، وكتب الأصول والتفسير والمنطق وغير ذلك، وقد صدر مؤخراً العديد من الدراسات الّتي أخذت تقرأ او تقارب التراث وفق معطيات المنهج التداولي.
إنّ عناية العلماء العرب والمسلمين باللغة كانت مبكّرة جداً، منذ مئات السنين؛ ما أنتج العديد من الأفكار والنظريات اللّغوية الناضجة والأصيلة الّتي سبقت في كثير من جوانبها ما طرحته الدراسات الغربية، فلو فتّشنا في تراثنا، لوجدنا الكثير من مبادئ التداوليّة حاضرة فيه بمصطلحات مغايرة.
