شكّل موضوع الإمامة وخلافة المسلمين مبرراً للصراع بين الطوائف والفرق الإسلامية فاختلفوا في تدبير ذلك، فكان هذا الإختلاف محركاً لمجموعة من المناظرات طرقت موضوعات شتى رجعت في معظمها لمشكل الخلافة، ولطبيعة الشروط التي وضعها العلماء لموضوع الإمامة.
وقد تناوت المناظرات السياسية إلى الخلف، بعد وفاة معاوية بن أبي سفيان، فقد كانت فترة حكمه أخصب مرحلة من حيث اعتماد المناظرة أسلوباً لتدبير الخلاف، ليحل بعده السيف فيصلاً في النزاع، فصار المجال فسيحاً لقمع كل صوت معارض.
إن غاية هذه الدراسة كشف فعالية المناظرات التداولية والحجاجية، من خلال فحص مناظرات سياسية، دارت أطوارها خلال العصر الأموي؛ بما حبل به من صراعات حول خلافة المسلمين، كان من نتائجها تقلب أحوال الحكم بين الحاكمين، فمن حكم راشد مع الصحابة الكرام، إلى حكم جبري مع بني أمية، ثم تقلب الحكم بين بني أمية أنفسهم، فمن ظالم مستبد، إلى عادل ملأ الدنيا عدلاً بعدما ملئت جوراً.
وقد قادنا البحث في المناظرات السياسية إلى حقيقة مفادها أن المناظرات السياسية لا تتوافق في كل الآداب والقواعد مع غيرها من المناظرات في كثير من الجوانب، إن كل محاورة تخوض في قضية تهم الحكم وتوابعه، تختلف عن المناظرات العلمية، طريقة وأسلوباً، ذلك أن طبيعة السياسة هي التي تفرض تواصلاً خاصاً بين المتناظرين، لعل أبرزه البحث عن الإفحام بأي نوع اتفق من أشكال الإقناع.
ولعل ابرز ما يثير الإنتباه حقاً، هو العنف اللفظي الذي يسري في المناظرات السياسية، إذ الغاية تحطيم صورة الخصم، وإعاقته عن القيام بالحجة، وكشف نقصه أمام الجمهور، للقدح في أهليته للحكم، أو أهليته لولاية من الولايات الدينية.
