اللغة اليمنية القديمة، أو العربية الجنوبية، أو الصيهدية هي إحدى لغات المجموعة اللغوية "الساميّة"، ولغة الممالك القديمة في جنوبي الجزيرة العربية (سبأ، معين، قتبان، حضرموت، حمير). كُتبت بها آلاف النقوش التي تعود إلى القرن الثامن ق.م، على أقلّ تقدير، حتى قبيل الإسلام. وبسبب الطول الزماني، والاتساع الجغرافي لمناطق انتشارها تمايزت فيها لهجات عديدة.
لم يكن اهتمامي بهذه اللغة ومصادرها الأثرية يتجاوز الاطلاع والمطالعة، ولكن عملي التدريسي في جامعة تعز 1997-2001 شجعني على التفرغ لذلك، ثم إعداد هذا المؤلف للتدريس في قسم التاريخ.
