مثلما كان للأفكار الدينية (المثيولوجية) أثر مهم ودور أساسي في حياة الإنسان البدائي وتصرفاته، فإن لها في الإنسان المعاصر أثراً، وتلعب في حياته دوراً. وإذا كان التاريخ يصنع الإنسان، فإن القصص الميثولوجية والمفاهيم الدينية التي ينشأ عليها ويؤمن بها الإنسان، هي التي تفعل فيه وتحدد له شخصيته وترسم معالمها. والحقيقة أن للمفاهيم الدينية قوة تتيح لها أن تأسر ألباب الأفراد والشعوب. وليس من السهل تغيير المفاهيم الدينية المتواترة منذ أكثر من ألفين وخمسمائة عام. ولذلك فإن العودة إلى الفكر اليهودي الديني ضرورية لتفهم عقلية اليهود وعقلية الشعوب المسيحية التي تهلل لادعاءاتهم وتروج لمزاعمهم.
وجورجي كنعان في كتابه هذا يحاول العودة إلى الفكر اليهودي الديني، ولذلك للكشف عن النزعات القومية والعنصرية والسياسية التي حملها بعض المعتقدات. والتعرف على السلوكية الأخلاقية التي دعت لإنتاجها تلك المعتقدات. وما حمل المؤلف على التعرض لهذه المعتقدات الدينية هو أن مسيحي العالم، خاصة في نصف الكرة الغرب، يتخذون من هذه المعتقدات وثيقة شريعة تجيز لبني إسرائيل اقتلاع الشعب الفلسطيني من أرضه بالطرد أو بالإبادة، وإقامة وطن قومي يهودي فوق هذه الأرض.
