يدور موضوع الكتاب حول القرنية عند الأصوليين وأثرها في القواعد الأصولية، والقرنية كما يعرفها "محمد الخيمي" في هذه الدراسة هي: ما يشير إلى درجة ثبوت النص الشرعي، أو إلى المعنى المراد من ذلك النص، من غير أن يكون مستقلاً في ذلك المعنى". من هنا كان الغرض من هذا البحث كما يقول مؤلفه: إلقاء الضوء على هذا العنصر الهام والمؤثر، من عناصر الإجتهاد وتفسير النصوص، بحيث أبيَن المراد منه حيث ورد في اللسان الأصولي، (...) وأكشف –ما امكنني ذلك- عن القواعد التي تحكمه، وأضرب الأمثال له، وأبيَن ما يترتب على الإختلاف فيه من إختلاف في الفروع. حتى أصل إلى ما يشبه النظرية التي تحكم هذا الموضوع بخطوطه العريضة، لا بتفصيلاته الدقيقة، لافتاً النظر إلى أهميته، مؤكداً على ضرورة إستحضاره في كلَ مرَة "يتعامل فيها مع نصَ من النصوص الشرعية".
وفي هذا الإطار، إعتمد المؤلف منهجاً يقوم على تخريج كل ما ورد من الشواهد القرآنية والأحاديث النبوية في الصحيحين، ثم الترجمة لكل من الخلفاء الأربعة، وأئمة المذاهب الأربعة وأشباهم في الشهرة، عزو نصوص العلماء إلى كتبهم مباشرة دون واسطة، الترجيح بين الأقوال لأدلة اصحاب المذاهب في المسائل المذكورة في هذا البحث، والإكثار من الأمثلة التطبيقية على المسائل محل الدراسة مع إختيارها من نصوص الكتاب والسَنة على الأغلب...
يقسم الكتاب إلى بابين: الباب الأول: تصور القرنية عند الأصوليين، والباب الثاني: تأثير القرائن في القواعد الأصولية.
