شعراء الردة هم شهود على حقبة تاريخية خطيرة من أواخر حياة النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم وأوائل العصر الراشدي، إذ ظهرت حركة الردة بقوة وعصبية قبلية مخيفة تهدد كيان الدولة العربية الإسلامية الأولى، ووقعت معارك طاحنة بين الطرفين كادت أن تؤدي بها وتعود الأمور إلى سابق عهدها، صراع قبلي، وتعدد آلهة، وعبادة أصنام، لولا موقف القيادة الإسلامية الحازم حينذاك وتجييشها الجيوش وضرب المرتدين في عقر دارهم لما عادت الأمور إلى نصابها، وكان في بعض المعارك الحامية الوطيس إثارة حقيقية، مثل معركة حديقة الموت التي قادها خالد بن الوليد خلفه جيشاً من المؤمنين، وقادها عن المرتدين مسيلمة الكذاب وكان النصر للمسلمين بعد شراسة في القتال وخسائر جسيمة تكبدها الطرفان.
وتباين شعراء عصر الردة في ولاتهم فمنهم من كان يحارب ويقاتل لجانب المرتدين وآخر يقاتل بصلابة الرجل المؤمن يدافع عن عقيدته ووحدة وطنه، فانتصر الحق وزهق الباطل، فكانوا جميعاً جزءاً من التاريخ، والكتاب لا غنى عنه في المكتبة العربية فهو ممتع للقارئ ومفيد للباحث.
