لقد حظيت حروب الردة وما فيها من أخبار وأشعار باهتمام المؤلفين العرب فقد ألفت منذ زمن مبكر عدة كتب أفردت لحروب الردّة غير الأخبار التي تضمنتها كبت التاريخ والأدب. إلا أنه لم يصل من هذه الكتب سوى كتاب الواقدي هذا، في نسخته النادرة التي عثر عليها المحقق في مكتبة خدا بخش في يانكي في الهند، وفيها شعر كثير يجاوز التسعمائة بيت، أكثره من الشعر النادر الذي لم تحفظه الكتب والدواوين، وهو شعر يمثل الفروسية والبطولة العربية؛ لأنه قيل أثناء التهيؤ للقتال أو الدعوة للنزال أو وصف الأحداث، وغالبية هذا الشعر لشعراء مغمورين لم يُعرفوا بقول الشعر ولم يشتهروا به، وقد أنطقتهم الحروب وأحداث الردة. وقد توزع الشعر على ستة وستين شاعراً من الشعراء المعروفين، وستة وستين من الشعراء المجهولين، وامرأتين، وجاء الشعر منسوباً لقائليه وتعداده اثنتا عشرة ومائة قطعة، والشعر المجهول القائل اثنتان وعشرون قطعة. هذا وقد كانت عناية الواقدي في هذا الكتاب كدأبه في كتابه المغازي، معنياً بذكر تفاصيل الأحداث، حريصاً على تدوين الرسائل والكتب والخطب وذكر المحاورات والمناوشات، لم يهمل الجزئيات والتفاصيل سجّل كل ما يمكن تسجيله في هذه الحروب مع تفسير شاف لأسباب الوقائع والأحداث، ولذلك فقد تفرّد الكتاب بمعلومات وروايات وأشعار لم تذكرها كتب التاريخ والأدب قبله، وقد اقتبس بعض المؤرخين من هذا الكتاب وذكروا بعض نصوصه مختصرة من مثل ابن سعد في الطبقات، والطبري في تاريخه، وعبد الرحمن بن حبيش في كتابه المغازي وابن حجر في الإصابة وغيرهم. ونظراً لأهمية هذا الكتاب فقد تمّ الاعتناء به حيث عمد المحقق إلى استهلاله بنبذة عن حياة المؤلف وعن مؤلفاته، كما أنه عمد إلى إخراجه بحلة معاصرة توثيقاً وتصميماً وتحقيقاً.
