Book Description
هذا الكتاب هو أطروحة دكتوراه في التاريخ، قدمها المؤلف في جامعة برنستن؛ الولايات المتحدة عام 1968. وقد ارتأى المؤلف مؤخراً تعريبها لوضعها في متناول القارئ العربي وطلاب العلم.
وفي حينه، بدا وكأنه تبريراً لدراسة تقويمية لحركة "الردة" والحروب التي ترتبت عليها، إذ على الرغم من الأعمال الكثيرة عن حياة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم، ظلت جوانب متعددة في هذه الحركة غامضة وتستدعي التوضيح. والخلافات بالرأي حولها،لم تتوقف عند طبيعتها ومداها وعلاقتها بحركة الفتوح العربية فحسب، وإنما تعدت ذلك إلى صدقية المصادر الأولية التي تناولت هذا الموضوع. وعلى أرضية التضارب في الروايات، عمد المؤرخون إلى ترجيح صوابية بعضها على بعض، وبالتالي تزكية بعض الرواة على الآخرين، فنبذوا أخباراً وكرسوا غيرها، وأخذوا بأقوال محدث دون سواه. وعلى العموم فالدراسات الحديثة، وبالمنهج الذي اتبعته في التعامل مع المصادر الأولية، لم توضح الصورة لأحداث الردة بقدر ما زادتها ضبابية.
هذه الدراسة ليست سرداً لأحداث الردة، مع أن هذه الأحداث لا تغيب عنها طبعاً وإنما هي بالجوهر محاولة استقصاء لخلفياتها، وتدقيق لوقائعها. وهي لا تقوم على اكتشاف مصادر جديدة، وإنما على تحميص دقيق للمعلومات المتوفرة في المصادر التقليدية، وهي كثيرة، كما يتضح من ثبت المراجع.
