جغرافية العمران هي أحد فرعي الجغرافيا الإجتماعية التي تدور في فلك دراسة السكان والعمران، فالجغرافية الإجتماعية هي الفرع الأم لجغرافية العمران بفرعيها الحضري والريفي. في كتابه المعنون" في جغرافية العمران" يدرس الدكتور أحمد البدوي محمد الشريعي /أستاذ الخرائط بجامعة أم القرى الأسس النظرية للجغرافيا البشرية ويبدأ من مقدمة إبن خلدون الشهيرة في أحوال العمران، وتقسيم الأراضي إلى أقاليم طبقاً لأحوال المناخ، ويذكر أن البدو أقدم من الحضر وسابق عليه وأن البادية أصل العمران والأمصار مدد لها، وبهذا المعنى فإن مفهوم كلمة (العمران) يبدو أكبر بكثير من الإعتبارات لهيكل المسكن نفسه وأصبح هذا اللفظ يمتد ليشمل البيئة السكنية والبيئة العامة المحيطة من مرافق وشوارع وغيرها.
ولأن دراسة الجوانب النظرية (جغرافية العمران) لا تكفي فإن مجال التطبيق في هذه الدراسة كان منطقة عسير بالمملكة العربية السعودية وهي المنطقة التي أقام بها المؤلف قرابة ست سنوات متصلة تعرّف من خلالها على جوانب جغرافية عديدة لهذه المنطقة، فكانت ثمرتها هذه الدراسة الهامة للتحول المديني في هذه المنطقة، فامتدت الدراسة على عشرة فصول بدأها بالتعريف بمناهج البحث المستخدمة في جغرافية السكن، مروراً بدراسة مورفولوجية المدينة وأحجام المدن والتوزيع الحجمي لمدن عسير، ثم توزيع الخدمات بمدينة أبها والعوامل المؤثرة في التوزيع، وعن الأقاليم العمرانية الريفية في عسير ... وعناوين أخرى.
