يدور موضوع الكتاب حول حياة وشعر "أحمد شوقي" (1868- 1932) أعظم شعراء العربية على مر العصور حتى أنه لقب بـ "أمير الشعراء".
يتناول "يوسف عطا الطريفي" في هذا الجهد –حياة الشاعر وبداياته الأولى، ثم سفره لدراسة الحقوق وعلاقته بالقصر، ثم ينتقل إلى دراسة شعره في المنفى وإبداعاته بعد عودته إلى وطنه؛ موضحاً آراء النقاد ومواقفهم منه بعد وفاته، ثم يتدرج الحديث إلى العوامل التي أثرت في شعره وموهبته الشعرية، جاعلاً عنواناً خاصاً "لسينيته" المشهورة، متناولاً إياها بالشرح والتحليل.
وأخيراً احتوى الكتاب على مختارات نثرية شملت خواطر أمير الشعراء ورسائله، ثم مختارات شعرية تمثل جوانب شوقي الشعرية.
ومن [نهج البردة] للشاعر شوقي نقرأ: "ريم على القاع بين البان والعلم، أخلَ سفك دمي في الأشهر الحرم/ رمى القضاء بعيني جؤذر أسداً، يا ساكن القاع، أدرك ساكن الأجم/ لمارنا حدثتني النفس قائلة، يا ويح جنبك، بالسهم المصيب رمي/ جحدتها، وكتمت السهم في كبدي، جرح الأحبة عندي غير ذي ألم...".
