من الممكن أن تكون هاتان الحادثتان المذكورتان في صفحات هذا الكتاب هما محوره. رافق الكاتب والده، ذا الأصل اللبناني، لزيارة منزلهما في حيفا، بعد أن احتلت الضفة الغربية، ورفضت ساكنة البيت فتح الباب لهما، بحجة أن آل عبد النور قد ماتوا كلهم، وأنها قد اشترت هذا البيت، ممن؟ لم تقل، ولكنها خجلت عندما رجاها أن تسمح له بزيارة الغرفة التي ولد فيها. تكرّرت التجربة هذه في مقالة وردت في ملحق "فلسطين" الذي تصدره شهرياً صحيفة السفير اللبنانية الغراء، صاحبة الولاء الأكبر للقضية الفلسطينية، حين نقلت تجربة "نعمتي فيضي العلمي"، أخت موسى العلمي، الشخصية الفلسطينية البارزة، وزوجة جمال الحسيني، عندما ذهبت لزيارة بيتها في القدس، في أول فرصة سنحت لها في السنة 1972. دقت الباب بعصاها التي تتعكّــز عليها ، ففتحت الباب امرأة يهودية عراقية، وطلبت منها السيدة نعمتي بأدب وتصميم: هل تسمحين لي بزيارة بيتي من الداخل؟ وبان العجب على المرأة، وقالت: بيتك؟ ولكننا اشتريناه! وردت السيدة أم حسن بهدوء وحزم: ولكني لم أبعه لأحد! أدركت الإسرائيلية ما يجري، فقالت بالعربية، وبلهجة عراقية: "لعنة الله عليهم. كان إلنا بيت بالعراق، إحنا ما كان لزاماً علينا أن نجيء ونواجه موقفا كهذا!".
