في مجموعته القصصية هذه، تبرز لدى الكاتب ماهر الزدجالي قدرةً فائقة على التأثيث اللغوي والتوظيف المجازي والإستعارة التي يجعل منها مجالاً لخدمة مشهده القصصي؛ ففي القصة المعنونة "فردتا حذاء" يصوب النظر حول فردتا حذاء تحاوران بعضهما البعض، "تذمرت فردة الحذاء من كثر المشي الطويل وجعلت تمسح العرق من على جبينها وتقول لأختها ألا يتعب صاحبنا من المشي طوال اليوم (...)". هذا التأثيث الموازي الذي جاء ضمن سياق الصورة وأنساقها، هو ما سوف يتضح معناه في النص بعد سرد الكاتب له سرداً تمثيلياً كاملاً بقصد بعث رسالة تنطوي على معنى أخلاقي أو درس إجتماعي أو مضمون سياسي ناقد "قال حذاء المتسول وهو يغمز بجفنه المائل: كيف الحال؟ لا شك أنك تمشي كثيراً. ورد الآخر بكبرياء وغرور: بالعكس إنني أقضي معظم وقتي على المكتب أو في السيارة ولا أعمل سوى يومين في الأسبوع ...". أما في قصصه اللاحقة يمزج الكاتب بين الفردي والإجتماعي مرتكزاً على مقاربة نفسية يستنطق من خلالها لاشعور أبطاله وما يتركه الواقع من تجريحات واعوجاجات في بُنية الروح الإنسانية، وهذا يعني أن "ماهر الزدجالي" من الكتّاب الذين أرسوا دعائم مشروع تحديثي في الكتابة بكل أبعاده ومستوياته.
يضم الكتاب عشرة قصص قصيرة جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: "وزير سابق!" ، "مذيعة أخبار" ، "بقايا سرير" ، "27 شرفة" ، "عقارب الإنتظار" ، "فردتا حذاء" ، "علبة .. علبتين .. ثلاث علب" ، "جزء من المخ مفقود" ، "التحدث بصمت" و "الغريب".
