هذا الكتاب هو من الكتب المهتمة في التراث العربي, وصاحبة من الأدباء وقد اشتمل الكتاب على ألف وأربعمئة وتسعة وستين مثلاً, سلك مؤلفها سبيل الإيجاز والاختصار في شرح المثل, دون ذكر قصة المثل في الغالب, وقد قسم الكتاب إلى تسعة وثلاثين باباً منها تسعة وعشرون على عدد حروف الهجاء بزيادة اللام ألف وزاد عليها الأبواب التالية في باب الألف: ما جاء على أفعل, ما جاء على لفظ أمر, ما جاء على لفظ الاستفهام, ما أوله إن, باب أن, باب إن خفيفة, باب ما جاء على لفظ الماضي, باب إذا, باب ما جاء بالألف واللام.
