يعد كتاب الأمثال للأصمعي أحد الكتب الأصول في اللغة عموماً، والأمثال بوجه خاص، فهو يمثل كتب مرحلة من مراحل التدوين التي فقدت أغلبها، فضلاً عن كونه من أوائل الكتب التي ألفت في الأمثال العربية القديمة، وهو خير مثال بين أيدينا على كتب المرحلة الثانية من مراحل جمع الأمثال تلك المرحلة التي نشطت على أيدي اللغويين والعلماء بعد النسابين والإخباريين.
وهو لا يزاحم كتاب المفضل الضبي في الأمثال الذي يهتم بإيراد القصص، مع الإقلال من التوجيه اللغوي، فإن كتاب الأصمعي تقل فيه القصص المسهبة بشكل واضح، بل إن شأنه شأن كتاب أبي فيد لا يكاد يلقى بالاً إلى هذه القصص فالمحور عنده المثل.
وقد اعتمد مؤلفي كتب الأمثال المتأخرين على مجموعة الأصمعي، وقد احتلّ الكتاب مكانةً بين كتب الأمثال واللغة والأدب، حيث صار مصدراً أصيلاً من مصادر اللغة والأدب.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب عمل الدكتور إياد إبراهيم على جمعه وتحقيقه، بهدف نشر تراث هذا الرجل خدمة للغة العربية وآدابها.
