هذا مختصر جمع فيه ما تفرق من الأبيات المفردة وأنصاف الأبيات التي ما زال الفضلاء يتمثلون بها في مكاتباتهم ومخاطباتهم في المعاني المختلفة والمتفقة، والمباني الموافقة والمتفرقة، من الحكم الدينية والدنيوية، وجوامع الكلم العقلية والنقلية، حتى صارت أمثالاً سائرة، ونجوماً في أفلاك البلاغة دائرة، وألِفتها الأسماع، وجُبِلَت على الميل إليها القلوب والطباع، وسارت بها الركبان في البلدان، وأجمع على إختيارها أرباب البلاغة والبيان، فظرزوا بها حواشي كتبهم، ورصّعوا بها جواهر فضلهم وأدبهم، وفضّلوها على سائر أبيات القصائد وفصّلوها تفصيل الدرراليتيمة في القلائد، فنظم الكاتب ما تناثر من فرائدها اليتيمة، وألقى ما تنافر من شواردها النفيسة القيمة، وسمّاه "كتاب الأمثال والحكم" ورتبه على عشرة فصول، ليسهل تناوله على تاليه وسامعه وحافظه وجامعه.
