ترك السلف اللبناني لخلفهم منجماً من التراث الفكري، غنياً بنفائس عظيمة أمكن استخراج الكثير منها في شكل مادة خام، تحتاج إلى عمليات تصفية وتنقية واختبار واختيار، للوصول إلى ما تحتوي عليه من جوهر ثمين. ومن بين ما خلف السلف من تراث فكري، العديد من الأمثال التي قالها حكماؤهم، فجرت على ألسنة الناس في حياتهم اليومية، يستخدمونها في شتى المناسبات لتؤدي وظائف مختلفة.
وقد توفر على جمع هذه الأمثال بضعة من الباحثين اللبنانيين، واستطاع كل منهم على حدة، أن يعرض مجموعة الأمثال التي تيسر له جمعها بطريقته الخاصة.
وكل مجموعة من مجموعات الأمثال اللبنانية المنشورة وغير المنشورة تحتوي على أعداد عديدة تصل إلى بضعة آلاف.
في هذا السياق جاء هذا البحث، الذي اختار له المؤلف من بين آلاف الأمثال اللبنانية التي اطلع عليها ودرسها، نيفاً ومائتي مثل، حيث حللها تحليلاً إجتماعياً بالمعنى الشامل، لكي يبيّن للقارىء "حكمة لبنان" أي حكمة أسلافه الذين امتازوا، في جوانب كثيرة من تفكيرهم، بنفاذ البصيرة، وأصالة الإستنتاج، وصواب الحكم. وقد كان انتقاء هذه الأمثال وفق خطة تتناول أهم ما يرتبط بالناس في علاقاتهم الإجتماعية بعضهم مع بعض، بحث تكون دليل عمل يرشدهم في حياتهم ويجعلها ميسرة لهم.
