يقول المؤلف السيد يسين عن هذا الكتاب الهام: الكتاب الذى أقدم له عبارة عن سلسلة من المقالات التى كتبتها عقب عودتى من فرنسا فى نهاية عام 1967، وهذه المقالات العشر جميعاً، التى أصبحت تكون فصول الكتاب، تمثل فى الواقع مشروعاً متكاملاً، الهدف منه رسم المعالم الأساسية لعلم الاجتماع الأدبى. غير أننى وجدت أن المدخل الضرورى لذلك هو التعريف بالمعركة المهمة التى دارت بين "النقد القديم" و"النقد الجديد" فى فرنسا لصلتها الوثيقة بالموضوع.
وإذا كانت القاعدة الأساسية فى البحث العلمى أن المسح ينبغى أن يسبق التعمق، فإن هذا الكتاب لا يطمح إلى أكثر من مسح الميدان وتخطيط الإطار النظرى للموضوع، تمهيداً لقيام بدراسات متعمقة فى مختلف جوانبه. وهذه الدراسات ينبغى ألا تقف عند حدود التحليل النظرى لمختلف المشكلات، وإنما يجب أن تجرى سلسلة من البحوث الميدانية على مختلف الظواهر الأدبية فى مصر، فذلك هو الأسلوب الوحيد الذى يسمح لنا بدراسة العلاقات المتشابكة بين الأدب والمجتمع.
