وقد جاء الكتاب في ستة أبواب، وفي كل باب فصول عدّة، بحث في الباب الأول: الجوانب اللغوية والثقافية للأمثال العربية، وفي الثاني: أهمية الامثال عند العرب وأغراضها، وفي الثالث: الأمثال العربية في العصر الجاهلي (النثرية والشعرية)، وفي الرابع: أمثال العرب في عصور صدر الإسلام والأموي والعباسي، وفي الخامس: أمثال العلماء والفقهاء، وفي السادس: مختارات من الأمثال الشعبية والأجنبية.
وهكذا يشكِّل الكتاب حديقة غنّاء متعددة الأغراس والثمار، ولكل قارئ أن يختار منها ما يشاء ففيها من العلم والثقافة واللغة وطرائف الأحداث ما يفيد ويمتع كل الأذواق.
