هذه قصة حَيّ بن يقظان لابن طفيل؛ وهو أبو بكر محمد بن عبد الملك بن طفيل القيسي الأندلسي، الفيلسوف والطبيب والقاضي المعروف، ولد في وادي آش بقرطبة، ودرس الحديث والفقه واللغة، وكان من تلاميذ الفيلسوف الشهير ابن باجة، تعلَّم الطبَّ في غرناطة، واشتغل وزيراً وطبيباً لأبي يعقوب يوسف؛ حاكم الأندلس من سلالة الموحدين، وتوفي سنة (581هـ) في مراكش.
وتعد قصة (حي بن يقظان) التي عمد فيها إلى توظيف الخيال والرمز للتعبير عن فكره الفلسفيّ واحدةً من اهم القصص الفلسفية في التاريخ الفكري والإنساني، وقد قيل؛ إنها أفضل قصة فلسفية عرفتها العصور الوسطى.
تدور أحداث القصة حول طفلٍ اسمه حي بن يقظان، ولد لأمٍّ كانت تعيش في إحدى جزر الهند تحت خط الإستواء، من قريبٍ لها اسمه يقظان، تزوجته خفيةً عن شقيقها الملك الذي منعها من الزواج به، وعندما وضعته خشيت من إنتقام شقيقها الملك، فجعلت الطفل في تابوت وألقته في البحر، فحملته الأمواج إلى ساحل جزيرة الواقواق، حيث عثرت عليه ظبية كانت تبحث عن ظلالها؛ أو صغيرها المفقود، فأرضعته وحضنته، وجعلته تحت رعايتها.
