حينما صدرت الطبعة الأولى من هذا الكتاب في عام 2000، صادفت كثيراً من الإستحسان لدى المشتغلين في الفكر العربي والإسلامي، فيما تصدى لها بعض الأدعياء بالنقد، إنطلاقاً من زعمهم بأن الوطن العربي - آنذاك - كان يتهيّأ لقفزة كبيرة بإتجاه الحداثة والديمقراطية وتكنولوجيات الإتصال، وقد بدا لهم هذا الكتاب - في ذلك الوقت - ضرباً من النكوص بإتجاه إشكاليات الماضي السحيق التي لم تعد مؤهلة للحضور أو الفعل في الواقع العربي.
ومع ضرورة التذكير بأن هؤلاء الأدعياء، كانوا يديرون أسطوانة لا يفقهون مفرداتها، بدليل أنهم سلّموا بأن الكتاب ينتمي إلى الماضي السحيق، لمجرّد أنه يحاور عدداً من إشكاليات وثنائيات القرن الثاني والثالث الهجريين بوجه خاص - دون أن يلمّوا بتفاصيلها طبقاً - فقد فاتتهم حقيقة أن هذه الإشكاليات والثنائيات ظلّت تنتج ويّعاد إنتاجها بصورة أو بأخرى على إمتداد الوطن العربي، إلى الحد الذي يمكن الزعم معه بأن الوطن العربي هو الحاضنة المثلى لتلك المقولة العتيدة (التاريخ يعيد نفسه)؛ وهذا ليس بالمستغرب في ظل سردية نمطية يمكن التنبؤ سلماً بدوراتها التاريخيّة وما يصاحب هذه الدورات من أفعال وردود أفعال.
