الأمثال هي ذاكرة الشعوب، وحافظة تجاربهم وخبرة أجيالهم، وهي ترجمة صادقة للحس الشعبي المصاغ باللهجة المحكية، انتشر المثل نتيجة تعبيره عن حادثة معينة، قاله شخص مجهول ليصبح فيما بعد، مع مرور الأيام ملكاً لعامة الناس يرددونه في الحالات المشابهة للحداثة أو الواقعة التي قيل فيها.
كثير من الأمثال الشعبية الفلسطينية تحمل صفات الحكمة وتعبيراتها، وتتفق إلى حد كبير مع شبيهاتها من الأمثال الشعبية العربية، نتيجة تشابه وتجانس الأجواء واللغة والتاريخ والأحداث.
ومن هنا ليس غريباً أن نجد مثلاً شعبياً فلسطينياً له ما يشبهه في الأمثال الشعبية العراقية أو المصرية أو غيرها من البلاد العربية من حيث الصياغة والمفهوم.
لدى الشعب العربي الفلسطيني ثروات هائلة من الزاد الثقافي والفكري بما فيه من مجازات وكنايات ورموز وأمثال، وتتفاوت الأمثال بإختلاف مواضيعها، ويجد الإنسان مثلاً أو أمثالاً لكل ما يخطر بباله من موضوعات تتصل بالحياة على إختلاف بيئاتها، وقد يجد كثيراً من الأمثال تحمل معاني متضاربة وينفي بعضها بعضاً، إلا أن الناس يولون الأمثال ثقة شبه تامة في تصديق أقوالهم وحالاتهم النفسية.
هذا الكتاب هو مساهمة للحفاظ على الأمثال الشعبية من الضياع، حيث يرى المؤلف أن جمع الأمثال الفلسطينية والمحافظة عليها هو واجب وطني وقومي وإنساني، لما تمثله الأمثال في الحياة الإجتماعية العزيزة على قلب كل فلسطيني وعربي ومهما حاولت الصهيونية تغيير ملامح الحياة العربية في فلسطين المحتلة.
