لكل شعب من الشعوب أمثاله التي يرددها في حياته اليومية، والتي تحمل بين طياتها تجارب هذا الشعب وتعكس قيمه الخلقية والاجتماعية، والشعوب تردد هذه الأمثال وتنقلها من جيل إلى جيل لأنهم وجدوا في المثل بما يحويه من كلمات قليلة تعبيرًا صادقًا عن واقع الحال ينطبق على الواقعة التي هم بصددها.
ولما للأمثال من قوة تأثير فقد رأينا أن الأنبياء والكتب المقدسة يستعملونها في مخاطبة الناس، فهناك سفر في التوراة يسمى سفر الأمثال ينسب إلى سليمان الحكيم، وكثير من عظات المسيح ووصاياه كان يوردها مورد الأمثال.
وللشعب الفلسطيني كغيره من الشعوب أمثاله النابعة من تجاربه في الحياة والتي تعبر عن قيمه الاجتماعية والخلقية، والتي تتناول كل منحى من مناحي الحياة فلا تكاد توجد حادثة لا يمكنك أن تجد المثل الذي ينطبق عليها. والمثل يأتي بصورة قوية مختصرة يغنيك عن استعمال كلمات كثيرة، ومما يزيد من تأثيره أنه يأتي بصورة مسجوعة أحيانًا مما يزيد من وقعه ويسهل حفظه وتناقله.
هذا، ولقد جمعت في هذا الكتاب ما قدرت على جمعه من الأمثال الشعبية وقمت بترتيبها ترتيبًا أبجديًا وشرح بعض الكلمات العامية التي قد لا يفهمها بعض القراء، كما قمت بإيراد ما يشابه المثل الفلسطيني من أمثال الشعوب الأخرى أو أبيات الشعر، كما أوضحت الغرض الذي يضرب من أجله المثل.
وإن الأمثال الشعبية الفلسطينية جزء هام من التراث الشعبي الذي يشكل شخصية هذا الشعب والذي يشكل الحفاظ عليه ونقله للأجيال حفاظًا على هذه الشخصية.
